TERMINOLOGY COMMITTEE OF THE SLOVENIAN MICROBIOLOGICAL SOCIETY

The Terminology Committee was established by the Slovenian Microbiological Society (SMD) in 1962 with the aim of reviewing microbiological terminology and preparing a microbiological dictionary. The first printed version was published in 1994 and issued by SMD. Alongside the chair of the terminology committee and then editor, Prof. Dr. Stanko Banič†, MD, the following members contributed to the work: Acad. Prof. Dr. Janez Batis†, Prof. Dr. Ivanka Brglez, Prof. Dr. Aleksa Cimerman, Prof. Dr. Jože Lazar†, Prof. Dr. Aleksander Konjajev†, Prof. Dr. Srečko Koren, Prof. Dr. Miklavž Kozak†, Prof. Dr. Ivan Mahne†, Prof. Dr. Jožica Marin, Prof. Dr. France Megušar, Prof. Dr. Franc Viktor Nekrep, Prof. Dr. Primož Schauer†, and Prof. Dr. Marjan Vozelj†.

However, this work did not end there. Language changes over time, and with the development of the field, new terms and new explanations arise, requiring continuous monitoring of terminology, updates, and expansion of the dictionary. Since electronic media allow faster response to these changes and thus greater efficiency, the second version of the dictionary was transferred into electronic form in 2002 under the editorship of Prof. Dr. Franc Viktor Nekrep. The following contributors worked on preparing the online version of the dictionary: Prof. Dr. Aleksa Cimerman, Prof. Dr. France Megušar, Prof. Dr. Jožica Marin, Prof. Dr. Jernej Logar†, Assist. Prof. Dr. Darja Keše, and Research Fellow Dr. Andrej Steyer.

In 2013, the Microbiological Dictionary was successfully transferred to the freely accessible online dictionary portal Termania (http://www.termania.net/slovarji/96/mikrobioloski-slovar), for which Prof. Dr. Franc Viktor Nekrep deserves particular credit.

Since 2016, the following members have been active in the SMD Terminology Committee: Assist. Prof. Dr. Darja Keše (editor), Prof. Dr. Franc Viktor Nekrep (editor), Prof. Dr. Aleksa Cimerman, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ivan Toplak, Assist. Dr. Urška Henigman, Assist. Dr. Barbara Šoba Šparl, and Dr. Irena Mavrič Pleško. The language editor is Prof. Dušan Maher.

We meet regularly according to a pre-arranged schedule at the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, Ljubljana. In 2012, we also invited the linguist Prof. Maher to join, who assists us in resolving linguistic questions. During meetings, we distribute microbiological entries from the dictionary “Dictionary of Microbiology and Molecular Biology, Singleton, P. and D. Sainsbury, 2001, 3rd edition. J. Wiley & Sons Ltd., 895 pp.” Each member prepares explanations for the assigned entries, which we then review jointly at the next meeting. The approved explanations are sent for language editing and subsequently entered into the online dictionary.

The Rulebook can be found at the link Rulebook on the Operation of the SMD Terminology Committee.

We welcome new suggestions from dictionary users so that the dictionary can be as useful as possible for the Slovenian scientific community. We would also be glad to welcome new candidates interested in contributing to this work.

On behalf of the SMD Terminology Committee
