Types of Awards
The SMD Recognition Award is a professional distinction granted to SMD members for contributions in the field of microbiology. The award is divided into three categories and is presented for:
a. Outstanding scientific-research achievements by young microbiologists of Slovenia
(the award is given to individuals who are no older than 35 at the time of the public call for nominations)
b. Significant professional, scientific-research, or pedagogical achievements in the field of microbiology in Slovenia
c. Successful organizational and/or professional work within the Society, its bodies, or its sections
The SMD Plaque is an award given to SMD members for scientific, developmental, or pedagogical achievements in the field of microbiology. It is divided into three categories and is awarded for:
a. Excellent scientific-research achievements with international impact
b. Outstanding achievements in the professional practice of microbiology
(e.g., in production or diagnostic practice)
c. Exceptional pedagogical achievements with international recognition in microbiology
The Plenčič Medal is the highest distinction awarded by the SMD. It is presented to an SMD member who has made a significant contribution to the development of microbiology in Slovenia and to the international recognition of Slovenian microbiology.
A candidate for the Plenčič Medal must meet at least four of the following criteria:
– Publications in high-quality scientific journals throughout their career and in the five years preceding the call for nominations
– Above-average contribution in the professional or pedagogical field of microbiology
– Organization of international and national events
– Activities promoting microbiology (e.g., public lectures, participation in television programs, outreach or public communication)
– Active involvement in the SMD
Honorary Membership of SMD is awarded to individuals for exceptional merit in promoting and developing professional, scientific-research, or pedagogical work in the field of microbiology in Slovenia.
Honorary membership may also be awarded to non-members of the Society and to distinguished foreign experts/scientists who have contributed to the development of microbiological science in Slovenia through their work.
Honorary membership may also be awarded to individuals for exceptional merit in supporting and promoting SMD internationally.
