SMD TERMINOLOGY COMMITTEE
In accordance with its statutes, the Slovenian Society for Microbiology (SMD) promotes the development of education in all fields of microbiology and supports the professional training of microbiologists. To this end, SMD has established its own Terminology Committee.
The Terminology Committee was founded by SMD in 1962 with the aim of reviewing microbiological terminology and preparing the first Slovenian microbiological dictionary. The first printed edition of the dictionary was published by the Society in 1994. In addition to the Chair of the Terminology Committee and editor at the time, Prof. Stanko Banič, PhD †, contributors included Academician Prof. Janez Batis, PhD †, Prof. Ivanka Brglez, PhD, Prof. Aleksa Cimerman, PhD †, Prof. Jože Lazar, PhD †, Prof. Aleksander Konjajev, PhD †, Prof. Srečko Koren, PhD, Prof. Miklavž Kozak, PhD †, Prof. Ivan Mahne, PhD †, Prof. Jožica Marin, PhD, Prof. France Megušar, PhD †, Prof. Franc Viktor Nekrep, PhD, Prof. Primož Schauer, PhD †, and Prof. Marjan Vozelj, PhD †.
In 2002, the Society also published the dictionary in electronic form, making it available online. This version was prepared under the editorship of Prof. Franc Viktor Nekrep, PhD, by Prof. Aleksa Cimerman, PhD †, Prof. France Megušar, PhD †, Prof. Jožica Marin, PhD, Prof. Jernej Logar, PhD †, Assist. Prof. Darja Keše, PhD, and Research Associate Andrej Steyer, PhD. In 2013, the Microbiological Dictionary was successfully transferred to the freely accessible online dictionary portal Termania, a development for which Prof. Franc Viktor Nekrep, PhD, deserves special recognition.
Between 2017 and 2025, the following members actively served on the SMD Terminology Committee: Prof. Darja Keše, PhD (Chair and Editor of the Microbiological Dictionary on Termania), Prof. Franc Viktor Nekrep, PhD (Editor of the Microbiological Dictionary on Termania), Associate Prof. Ivan Toplak, PhD, Assistant Urška Henigman, PhD, Research Associate Barbara Šoba Šparl, PhD, Dr. Irena Mavrič Pleško, and Assistant Monika Novak Babič, PhD. Until 2022, language editing was carried out by Prof. Dušan Maher †, who joined the Committee as a linguist in 2012.
In 2026, the composition of the SMD Terminology Committee changed somewhat. The Committee is currently chaired by Prof. Marjanca Starčič Erjavec, PhD, and includes Associate Prof. Karmen Godič Torkar, PhD, Barbara Janžič, Prof. Darja Keše, PhD, Prof. Irena Mavrič Pleško, PhD, Prof. Franc Viktor Nekrep, PhD, Research Associate Monika Novak Babič, PhD, Research Associate Bojan Papić, PhD, Assistant Prof. Barbara Šoba Šparl, PhD, Assistant Prof. Rok Tomazin, PhD, and Rok Dovjak as language editor. The editors of the Microbiological Dictionary on Termania are Prof. Marjanca Starčič Erjavec, PhD, Prof. Darja Keše, PhD, Prof. Franc Viktor Nekrep, PhD, and Rok Dovjak as language editor.
